VIEWPOINT
Seattle's media jackals
by George Bakan, Editor-in-Chief
It is long past time for Seattle's media jackals to let the body of Judge Gary Little cool. Folks, the man is dead. Buried weeks ago. There is no retribution or vengeance to be had by the continued rehashing of his exploitations and mistakes.
Public repetition of the details of these sexual misadventures may in fact harm rather than help the victims. Like other situations of abuse, those victims need in depth counseling from professionals and much love and support from friends and family. They don't need more cameras and questions.
Voices of reason are trying to focus much needed attention on judicial reform and the public's right to know. The voices of pure sensationalism have reduced Seattle's TV reportage in past days to sub-Enquirer quality. Shame, shame.
A worst case scenario pledge
by Henry Gay
Reprinted with permission from the
Seattle Post-Intelligencer September 13, 1988
Good morning, class. As you know, President George Bush made the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America in our schools his number one priority during the recent election. Now that he is our new leader, he has supplied us with a new pledge, which we will recite at the start of each school day. It is little longer than the old pledge that Mikhail Dukakis threw out of the classroom, but is even more exciting and inspirational than the original (10-minute pause). Now that you are through demonstrating against Comrade Dukakis, sweep up the aisles from the effigy, return to your desks, put one hand on your heart and the other on your Bible and repeat after me...
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the patriotic Republican administrations for which it stands, one secret government bearing the white man's burden under a Christian God who is now, no thanks to the Democrats, back in the classroom, the operating room, the library, and the movie theatre, indivisible, except for the obvious necessary division between races, rich and poor, Christian and heathen, management and labor, straight and homo, with liberty and justice for all who can afford it. May a loving God have mercy on those little buggers who refuse to recite this pledge after we beat the stuffing out of them during the morning recess. Amen.
